I selected the
pieces in my portfolio because they all had a form or representation of circles
in them. Using a circular shape has been predominant in my artwork for the past
few months because I like how versatile it can be in my pieces. It can be used
simply, produced in multiples to create a pattern, layered, or as a focal point.
Something about their shape and easy repetition is extremely appealing, and
it’s often my go to object when doodling. My hope is that when people look at
my art, they see that it’s more than a few circles arranged on a background. I
want viewers to see the amount of effort I’ve spent on my pieces, and that I
have actually put a lot of thought into them; especially in the pieces with a
lot of the layers. I also hope that my artwork brings people the same
satisfaction I get when I use any circles.
Art has always been a huge part of my life, as far back
as I can remember. I would spend endless hours of my childhood drawing, usually
before any of my family members were awake. Art wasn’t just a fun pass time
for my though; it was the way that I expressed myself. When I couldn’t convey
something verbally to people around me, I would instead put in down on paper in
whatever I drew. Everything I took in from my environment would also appear in
my artwork, whether it my dislike for my brother (shown in many pieces of us
fighting), or things I would see & interpret as my own (like a pregnant
snowman drinking alcohol, mimicking those drinking while pregnant warnings at
restaurants). And this still holds true today, where if I ever feel frustrated
or excited, I can always take these feelings and produce art from them. Art is
my form of release, and my escape from reality if I ever need it. It allows me
to create things not possible in reality and gives my mind the freedom to roam.
