My
concentration is on relationships in skin. Initially my aim was to portray folds
in the skin, like rolls of fat, but as I progressed I started to include other
relationships, like how fat, muscle and bone interact with the surface of the
skin, and the skin’s reaction to certain movements. I also started to explore
skin by showing how shadows fall on different areas of the skin.
In
doing art, I always need to layer my materials. Especially in the subtleties of
skin, one or two layers alone cannot successfully capture the feel and depth.
The biggest reason I layer is because it makes art fun. Taking art too seriously
takes away all the enjoyment and relaxation that can be gleaned from it, and
layering allows for a less serious attitude in art. Different ideas can come
through and experimentation to take place, and the flexibility of layering
allows for any mistakes to be corrected.
