I chose to do a concentration on bridges, because I thought they would be an interesting thing to paint. There are many very unique kinds of bridges, so I could create a variety of different pieces which all have an individual voice without having to stray very far from my original concept. This was important, because I wanted all of my pieces to connect with each other so my concentration would be unified. Bridges are naturally beautiful, so going into each piece I already had something to work off; this way I could focus on the concepts and the ways I would represent them.
My original plan was to have the structural aspect of the bridges be the focus of the piece; however as I progressed, it also became important to show how they interact with their environment. It was a personal struggle to find the balance between developing the background and still have the bridge as the focal point. The concepts behind each bridge are all very similar. The growth that happened from piece to piece was in the discovery of how to use lines and color to create the illusion of depth. My work is strongest when it is loose and flows freely. I tend to get caught up in all of the little details, but I do my best work when I just let it come naturally.
