  WORD COLLAGE

For this assignment you will begin by choosing a word from the list on the back of this sheet.  Choose a word that interests you, one that you can imagine visually.  Please look up the word you have chosen on the Internet or in a real dictionary and write or type out the definition before you start the next step.

You will be designing a collage composition based on your chosen word.  However, your collage may not contain words, only pictures, shapes, colors etc.  Your composition should reflect the meaning of the word, the images/feeling that it conjures in your mind.

Try to keep your collage relatively nonrepresentational because you will be painting the collage after it is finished.  Therefore, if you use images of faces, human bodies and other representational, detailed objects you will be forced to draw and paint those images again in your painting.  Also, we are working small, both the collage and your final painting will be just 8”x10” – thus, the more small details you have in your collage the harder they will be to paint.

Sequence of Project (due the last week of April):

  1. Choose word and print out/write out definition
  2. Collect images for collage and begin creating ideas for your composition (do NOT glue anything down yet!)
  3. Once your composition has been completely designed you may begin gluing
  4. Color matching exercise
  5. Painting of collage
  6. Matting of finished project

I will be assessing this assignment on the following criteria:

Composition

Concept (does your piece relay the feeling/meaning of the word you chose?)

Color (did you accurately match the colors from your collage to your painting?)
